The Heat and Buildings strategy has set out a comprehensive plan on how the UK will decarbonise, starting with homes and moving on to commercial, industrial and public sector buildings. The report was compiled and published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 19th October 2021.
The heat and buildings strategy significantly wants to cut down on carbon emissions from 30 million homes and workplaces. The government wishes to achieve this by the installation of simple, low-cost and green technology while also safeguarding that it is affordable and fair for households across the nation.
Likewise, the transition to electric vehicles will be a slow transition. It will start by incentivizing consumers and lowering costs.
The UK is a financial hub and currently houses 30 million buildings. Heating these buildings contributes to one-fourth of the UK’s emissions. By addressing the carbon emissions produced to heat and power residential, public and industrial buildings, we can save costs on energy bills alongside improving lives – this green strategy will support up to 240,000 skilled green jobs by 2035. It is a much-needed boost for the economic recovery post-pandemic. It will ensure we build back better and level up across the entire country.
The heat and building strategy is built on the commitments made on previous strategies, namely, Clean growth: transforming heating, Energy white paper and the PMs Ten-point plan.
The strategy provides a clear pathway for the 2020s. It highlights the strategic decisions that must be taken within this decade to demonstrate how the UK plans to stay on track to achieve net-zero and meet its carbon targets by 2050.
The boiler upgrade scheme is part of the clean heat grant proposal aimed at future support for low carbon heat. The government has provided capital grants for the installation of, low carbon heating systems in residential and non-residential buildings. Likewise, the heat pump ready innovation program is another initiative as part of the net-zero innovation portfolio. You can gain more information about it here.
